Les auteurs ont souhaité, au travers de cet article, de décrire le fonctionnement des disques durs magnétiques, afin d’aider les professionnels du domaine judiciaire...

The magnetic hard disk drive is both the operating heart and the recording brain in our computers, enabling the storage and recovery of archived data. In this article, the authors wanted to describe how the hard drive works in order to be able to help professionals in the judicial domain, particularly those who order criminal, civil and arbitral expert reports, understand the possibilities and risks involved in carrying out an in-depth, technical, examination. This task should be backed by experience. It should not be limited to mere formulas or reliance on the mechanical application of forensic software. The article illustrates, in particular, the possibilities of full or partial recovery of information after a deliberate or accidental deletion or one produced by the computer itself. We also emphasize the inherent limits of these investigations and especially want this article to be able to assist in a better, more comprehensive, reading of expert investigative reports, which are necessarily technical but which should always be easily accessible to all parties to the proceedings or dispute.
